on trend: winner's circle.
July 07, 2011
Back in high school, my friends fawned over this quote: “If you love someone put their name in a circle not a heart, because a heart can be broken, but a circle goes on forever.” I spent the rest of the summer circling the names of crushes, and while I can’t recall a single one of those names right now (I may be telling a little white lie here, people.), the circle thing stuck. The shape has long been heralded as a symbol of eternity, so perhaps it comes as no surprise that the circle remains one of the most timeless elements of design, which is great considering how limitless it is in its many interpretations—from a hand-carved and painted chain necklace to a funky mid-century modern lamp and everything in between. And there you have it. The circle: Great for design, not so great for Billy or Joey or whatever his name was.
