Such Great Heights
January 30, 2013
For two years, Chinese artist Xu Bing poured himself into creating not one but two beautiful pieces that together are bringing the art world to new heights. Using harvested materials from urban construction sites in China, Bing transformed demolition debris, steel beams, tools and even fragments left behind from the migrant laborers to create Phoenix, a monumental installation that features two of the supernatural birds.
“The mythic phoenix bears witness to the complex interconnection between labor, history, commercial development and the rapid accumulation of wealth in today's China.” [via]
The internally illuminated birds weigh in at over 12 tons and are suspended in mid-air inside the Mass MoCA’s football-sized building in North Adams, Massachusetts. Sure to take your breath away, this exhibition is not one to be missed!
