What we love best about Arizona homes is that, well, they’re in Arizona. What we mean by that is that it’s easy to tell which homes are coming out of that mountainous desert terrain, not only by the scenery visible through the often-expansive windows but also because the residences typically have a regional flavor that makes them distinctive—a flair that transcends the popular rustic-meets-contemporary or sophisticated European looks. So, it’s always interesting for us to see what an out-of-state designer brings to the mix. In the case of this Scottsdale estate, Los Angeles-based designer Luis Ortega nails it, bringing cool California style to the home but keeping his palette sensitive to the muted hues and neutral shades of the desert surroundings, which are integrated into the home seamlessly thanks to the work of Phoenix architect C.P. Drewett. “There is so much natural sculpture everywhere you look,” Drewett says. “I wanted the house to respond to that.”
