Isn’t it funny that we use “blue” to describe the way we’re feeling when we’re in a funk? For us, blue is the exact opposite: calming and refreshing, especially when it’s used in a masterfully executed room, like this one by Steven Gambrel. The designer goes all out, using the cool hue on the wall and as a playful striped pattern on the custom-designed chairs. The color is also woven into the rug’s intricate patterns and a present theme in the abstract artwork above the mantel. And while Gambrel admits mixing bright shades and eye-catching patterns in a room requires a delicate balancing act, he pulls it off with aplomb: “With a hint of dark in the room, no recessed lighting and very little natural light, you can get away with it,” he says. “You can control the strong color mostly through lighting.”
